Welcome to the long-awaited 'Design Like William Morris' class. It has taken me a while to compile enough biographical information and examples of diverse design concepts to be able to run this, the most requested 'Design Like' yet!
For those of you who are new to the 'Design Like' series, this live/ recorded class runs once over zoom and is then recorded for you to watch/buy anytime after. During the class recording I share a slideshow of dozens of examples of Morris' decorative and design work, a brief overview of his life, and I give you a number of design challenges to follow along with me. The idea is that you learn Morris' tricks and, in this case, ways to create patterning without using a computer. We will also look at his main motifs and the devices he used most often to create his iconic look. You should leave the class with a collection of sketches that are original, but in the William Morris style, that you will be able to turn into rug hooking patterns. As a rug hooker, I'm always preoccupied with creating patterns that can be done successfully with fiber, as opposed to a paintbrush.
This is a stress-free, informal class wherein we can work at our own pace and later return to the recording if you get creatively caught up in a really special composition.
