Harriet Powers Challenge Collection

Welcome to the new Ribbon Candy Hooking Challenge, beginning on Juneteenth and celebrating the beloved and amazingly talented artist, Harriet Powers. Harriet was a 19th century enslaved person with a beautiful, creative spark that led her to tell stories with her quilts. Many of her blocks are based on Bible stories and other refer to daily life (her life was 1837-1910) including weather and astronomical phenomena, like a meteor shower, 'Cold Thursday', and 'Red Light Night,' occurring in 1846, and 'The Dark Day' a mysterious day darkness that occurred before her lifetime, in 1780.

Join in with hooking these small (they're all about 12") emblems of the past. They are all graphically stunning and historically meaningful. The fact that the USPS has chosen four of  Harriet's images as novelty stamp designs.
This tribute to Harriet's life and her creative genius is the backbone of this open, interpretive challenge. I will plan forward to display the finished pieces in 2027. I started a group called 'Ribbon Candy Hooking's Tribute to Harriet Powers on facebook, if you'd like to join and follow the progress of other people participating in the Harriet Powers challenge!
