My journey into rug hooking began on Prince Edward Island (PEI) in 2014. We had gone to Nova Scotia & PEI for vacation, starting with PEI. On our last day, I decided I really wanted to visit a Rug Hooking shop, to see what it was all about. We stopped in a small shop somewhere and 3 hours, $400 USD later I had a frame, two kits, and a quick lesson on the basics. I was hooked.
We like to look at the scenery, and we drove from one end of the island to the other. I was completely taken by the gentle hills of red earth ending in cliffs down to the ocean on the north side. I designed this rug while we were there—knowing little about rug design at the time—and it remains the cumulation of my memories of PEI.
The pattern is a windy day, with a riotous sea, and the scale of the objects is playful. The design has three zones, each hooked in a different way, to create movement and visual interest in the pattern. This pattern would work in many different colorways.
PEI Memories was originally hooked at 15" x 24" and is available at that size on Linen or Monk's Cloth. Please let us know if you want a Punch Needle pattern (the design is reversed).
Each pattern includes the backing with the design hand-drawn, a 4+” border, and serged edge to prevent unraveling. Also included is a color photo of the completed design as hooked by S. Kirsten Gay
